Waikoloa, HI

Waikoloa is a resort-oriented community on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, located in Hawaii County. The combined resort area and adjacent Waikoloa Village have a population of roughly 7,000 to 8,000 residents, though visitor counts swell dramatically throughout the year thanks to the destination's appeal. Known for its sunny, generally dry weather, sweeping lava fields dotted with manicured tropical landscaping, and two main hubs — Waikoloa Beach Resort and Waikoloa Village — it serves as a popular gateway to the Kohala Coast's white-sand beaches, championship golf courses, and significant Hawaiian cultural sites. The nearest major city is Kailua-Kona, located about 25 miles to the south along the Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, with a typical drive time of roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.

Just north of the resort, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is widely considered one of the finest white-sand beaches in Hawaii. A long crescent of soft sand framed by turquoise water and black-lava outcroppings, it offers swimming, bodyboarding, bodysurfing, and snorkeling in generally calm conditions, along with covered picnic pavilions and lifeguard services. From Waikoloa, the drive to Hapuna typically takes under ten minutes, making it an easy excursion for families and beachgoers staying at nearby vacation rentals.

A short drive farther up the coast, roughly 20 minutes north of Waikoloa near the harbor town of Kawaihae, sits Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site. This reconstructed stone temple was built by King Kamehameha I in the late 1700s to help unify the Hawaiian Islands, and the surrounding park interprets Hawaiian religion, history, and culture through exhibits and ranger-led programs. Adjacent trails lead to the older Mailekini Heiau and the neighboring coastal headlands, where whales can sometimes be seen offshore during the winter months.

About 90 miles to the southeast, across the broad shoulders of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers a dramatic counterpoint to the resort's coastal setting. The park showcases two of the world's most active volcanoes, with sweeping calderas, lava tubes, rainforest, and — conditions permitting — visible surface lava flows. The drive from Waikoloa runs roughly two to two and a half hours, often combined with a stop in the art-filled town of Hilo on the island's eastern side.

Waikoloa's combination of resort amenities, reliably pleasant weather, and proximity to beaches, cultural sites, and one of the country's most distinctive national parks makes it a compelling base for short-term rentals. Vacationers can spend mornings on Hapuna's sand, afternoons exploring ancient Hawaiian temples, and evenings stargazing from the high-elevation slopes above, all while returning each night to the comfort of a private home or condo along the Kohala Coast.
