Haiku Regulations

Allowed with moderate permitting and a hard cap of 48 STRH permits in the Paia–Haiku CPA (≈11 remaining as of Oct 2025), plus operational constraints (on-site manager and parking, ad rules), though hotel‑zoned condos can operate without a County STRH permit; Bill 9’s phase‑out plan for some apartment‑zoned units adds investor risk.

About Haiku

Haiku is a small, lush community on the windward (northeastern) slopes of Maui in Maui County, Hawaii. The Haiku-Pauwela census-designated place has a population of roughly 8,000 to 9,000 residents, scattered across rolling, green hillsides threaded with eucalyptus and guava. The area is known for its tropical, rural character, working farms, flower nurseries, and a laid-back, off-the-beaten-path feel that contrasts with Maui's resort-heavy west side. It sits just inland from the famous north-shore beaches and serves as a quiet gateway to the legendary Road to Hana, which begins its winding journey at the bottom of the valley. Haiku is located about 15 miles east of Kahului, the island's main commercial hub and home to Maui's primary airport, an easy drive of roughly 25 to 30 minutes down the Hana Highway.

One of the most celebrated attractions near Haiku is Ho'okipa Beach Park, just a few miles down the hill from the community toward the coast. This crescent of sand and reef is internationally recognized as one of the world's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing spots and is a regular stop on the professional surfing circuit. Spectators can watch windsurfers launching from the small pavilion area and surfers riding the outer breaks, all framed by dramatic views of the ocean and the West Maui Mountains in the distance.

Just a short drive down the hill from Haiku sits the colorful little town of Pā'ia, a former sugar plantation town that has evolved into a beloved North Shore destination. The town is lined with surf shops, art galleries, and a well-known cluster of casual restaurants and food trucks that draw both visitors and locals. Pā'ia also serves as a practical hub for travelers, offering gas, groceries, and a laid-back counterpoint to the resort areas elsewhere on the island.

Further afield, Haleakalā National Park rises above the island's interior and is roughly an hour and a half to two hours' drive from Haiku, depending on route. The park's most famous feature is the vast Haleakalā volcano, whose summit crater sits at more than 10,000 feet and is renowned for sunrise and stargazing. From the cool, often otherworldly high-elevation landscape, visitors can also hike into the crater along a range of trails that descend through cinder deserts and rare silversword plant habitats.

Haiku's appeal as a base for short-term rentals lies in the rare combination it offers: a quiet, green, residential setting removed from Maui's busier resort corridors, yet within easy reach of the island's most iconic experiences. Guests staying here can wake up to cool trade winds and misty ridge-line views, drop down to Ho'okipa to watch the windsurfers, grab breakfast in Pā'ia, and set off for Hana or for the slopes of Haleakalā all in the same day. That blend of seclusion and access, paired with the natural beauty of the windward side, makes Haiku a particularly attractive option for travelers who want an authentic Maui experience that goes beyond the beachfront condo.
