Freeport, FL

Freeport is a small city in Walton County, in the heart of Florida's Panhandle, with a population of roughly 2,500 residents. It carries a quiet, rural, Old Florida character, set among longleaf pine forests, slow-moving rivers, and ranchland, yet it functions as one of the more affordable gateways to the famously scenic South Walton beaches and the 30A corridor. The nearest major city is Pensacola, sitting about 60 miles to the west and roughly an hour's drive along US-98, while the much larger regional hub of Tallahassee lies around two hours to the east. Because of its position just inland of the Emerald Coast, Freeport appeals to visitors who want a relaxed, wooded home base within easy reach of some of the Gulf's most photographed shoreline.

The drive from Freeport to most of these communities is typically 20 to 35 minutes, making it possible for guests to enjoy a full beach day and return to a quieter setting for the evening.

Right in Freeport's backyard, Point Washington State Forest covers more than 15,000 acres of longleaf pine flatwoods, offering hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and paddling along several bayous that open into Choctawhatchee Bay. The forest's trail network is only a few minutes from town, giving visitors an easy way to experience the Panhandle's native landscape without the crowds of the coast.

A short drive east brings visitors to Eden Gardens State Park, a tranquil property overlooking Tucker Bayou with the beautifully restored 1890s Wesley Mansion, formal gardens, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and a quiet picnic area along the water. The park lies roughly 15 to 20 minutes southeast of Freeport and is one of the most photographed historic sites along the Emerald Coast.

To the north, the town of DeFuniak Springs, about a 25-minute drive, is best known for its nearly perfectly circular Lake DeFuniak, one of only two natural round lakes in the world, surrounded by a historic walking trail, the 1887 Florida Chautauqua Assembly grounds, and a charming downtown of Victorian architecture.

Freeport makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it pairs a calm, small-town setting with quick access to the South Walton beaches, state forests, and historic Panhandle towns. Guests can spend mornings on the Gulf and afternoons kayaking bayous or strolling under mossy oaks, then return to a quieter, more affordable community than the beachfront itself, which keeps both demand and nightly rates healthy throughout much of the year.
