Trinidad, CO

Trinidad is a small historic city in Las Animas County in southern Colorado, sitting along the Purgatoire River just north of the New Mexico border. With a population of roughly 8,000 residents, it carries the feel of an intimate mountain-plains town rather than a busy Colorado resort. Once a prosperous coal-mining and railroad hub along the Santa Fe Trail, Trinidad has reinvented itself in recent decades as a center for outdoor recreation, historic preservation, and the arts, and is widely regarded as a gateway to the rugged landscapes of the southern Rockies. The city lies about 200 miles south of Denver along Interstate 25, roughly halfway between Denver and Santa Fe, making it a natural stopover for travelers crossing the region.

About seven miles west of downtown, Trinidad Lake State Park wraps around a reservoir and offers camping, fishing, boating, and miles of shoreline and foothill trails. The park's piñon-juniper hills and open prairie make it a popular year-round destination for hikers, anglers, and wildlife watchers, and it anchors much of the immediate outdoor recreation in the area.

Just south of town rises Fisher's Peak, a distinctive butte visible from nearly everywhere in Trinidad and the centerpiece of one of Colorado's newest state parks. Fisher's Peak State Park, which opened to the public in 2021, encompasses tens of thousands of acres of canyon country, mixed-conifer forest, and high prairie, with miles of trails climbing toward the roughly 9,600-foot summit. The park's proximity to the city makes it an easy half-day outing for visitors staying in town.

Downtown Trinidad is a well-preserved collection of Victorian-era brick buildings, and the historic core has been formally recognized as the Corazon de Trinidad Creative District, home to galleries, antique shops, breweries, and a growing food scene. Visitors strolling the blocks around Main Street can stop into the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art, which houses one of the region's best collections of cowboy and Native American art, and just west of the city, the former coal camp of Cokedale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a glimpse into the early-twentieth-century mining history that built the region.

To the north, the twin summits of the Spanish Peaks rise abruptly from the plains about an hour's drive away, and the surrounding San Isabel National Forest offers hiking, scenic drives, and some of Colorado's most distinctive volcanic geology. The peaks have long served as a navigational landmark for travelers along the Santa Fe Trail.

Trinidad's combination of small-town character, a walkable historic downtown, and immediate access to state parks, public land, and the I-25 corridor makes it a practical and appealing base for short-term rentals. Visitors come for the outdoor recreation and the arts scene, but the city's setting and easy day-trip reach to destinations like the Spanish Peaks, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and northern New Mexico keep it on the radar for travelers looking to explore southern Colorado.
