About Fort Garland

Fort Garland is a small unincorporated community in Costilla County, in the southern San Luis Valley of Colorado. With roughly 800 residents, it has the feel of a quiet, high-desert crossroads town set against a dramatic backdrop of mountain ranges and open plain. The community is best known as the home of the historic 19th-century military post that gave it its name, and it serves as a convenient gateway to some of Colorado's most striking landscapes, including the towering dunes to the north and the old Hispano villages of the Culebra Creek drainage to the south. It sits about 25 miles east of Alamosa, the nearest sizable city, and roughly 200 miles south of Denver along the Highway 160 corridor.

Just outside the heart of the community, Fort Garland State Park preserves one of Colorado's frontier-era military outposts, established in 1858 to protect settlers in the San Luis Valley. The site's museum, operated by History Colorado, interprets the fort's role in the early Territorial period and the years when Kit Carson served as its commander. Visitors can walk the original adobe parade ground and visit exhibits on Hispano and Ute history. The park is essentially in town, just a few minutes' drive from any rental in the area.

About a 40-minute drive northwest of Fort Garland lies Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. Beyond the iconic dune field, the park also includes alpine tundra, wetlands, and the seasonal Medano Creek, making it a year-round destination for hiking, sandboarding, and stargazing. It is the single largest draw in the region and a primary reason travelers pass through the San Luis Valley.

A short drive south, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad departs from Antonito, roughly 35 miles away. This heritage steam railroad carries passengers on a narrow-gauge journey into the mountains of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, crossing the border at the 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass. It is one of the most beloved historic rail experiences in the American West.

To the south of Fort Garland, the town of San Luis, Colorado's oldest continuously inhabited community, offers a glimpse into the region's deep Hispano and cultural heritage, with adobe churches, family-run restaurants, and access to the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross on the nearby Sangre de Cristo range.

With its affordable setting, wide-open setting, and proximity to both a national park and a national historic railroad, Fort Garland appeals to travelers looking for a quieter, more rural Colorado experience. Short-term rentals here serve visitors drawn to the dunes, the historic forts, the scenic railroad, and the unhurried pace of the San Luis Valley.
