Smith River, CA

Smith River is a small unincorporated community in Del Norte County, in the far northwestern corner of California, just south of the Oregon border. With a population of roughly 900, it has the feel of a quiet agricultural hamlet set among dairy pastures, lily and daffodil fields, and the forested hills that frame California's North Coast. The community functions as a gateway to some of the most pristine old-growth redwood groves in the state and to the wild Smith River, one of the last major undammed rivers in the lower 48. The nearest city of any size is Crescent City, the Del Norte County seat, which sits about 15 miles to the southwest along US-101.

Just minutes north of the community, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park protects some of the world's tallest coast redwoods, including groves so dense they feel almost primeval. Redwood National Park is the larger federal park that adjoins Jedediah Smith and the other state redwood parks, and its northern reaches can be reached from Smith River in roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Together with Prairie Creek Redwoods and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Parks, the system forms a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that supports backcountry hiking, wildlife viewing (including Roosevelt elk), and a scenic coastal drive along US-101.

About 25 minutes southwest, Crescent City offers a working harbor, the historic Battery Point Lighthouse, and easy access to Tolowa Dunes State Park, a wild coastal wetland known for birding and wide, empty beaches. Closer to home, the Smith River itself draws anglers, kayakers, and swimmers to its clear, cold waters, which are famous for salmon and steelhead fishing in season.

The combination of small-town quiet, immediate access to old-growth redwoods, and proximity to both the rugged Pacific coast and the wild Smith River makes this corner of Del Norte County a compelling base for a short-term rental. Travelers heading between the Pacific Northwest and the rest of California, as well as visitors drawn specifically to the redwoods, find a calmer, less-crowded alternative to the busier gateway towns further south.
