Saratoga Regulations

Saratoga citywide bans STRs in single-family districts (rentals ≤30 days prohibited) with no permits available and active enforcement; a draft ordinance proposes caps and TOT but is not yet adopted, making compliance risky and future rules uncertain.

About Saratoga

Saratoga is a small, affluent city in Santa Clara County, California, nestled in the western foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the heart of Silicon Valley. With a population of approximately 30,000, it carries the feel of a quiet, well-tended residential community, ringed by oak-studded hills and dotted with mid-century homes, small vineyards, and a compact historic village center. It is best known as one of the quieter, more residential corners of the Bay Area, prized for its tree-lined streets, its cluster of mountain wineries, and its proximity to both the high-tech corridor of the South Bay and the redwood forests of the upper Santa Cruz Mountains. San Francisco lies roughly 50 miles to the northwest, an hour's drive (sometimes considerably more) over the hill and across the Bay, while San Jose is only about 10 miles to the east.

Just outside the city, Big Basin Redwoods State Park is the marquee natural draw of the region. Located about 20 miles southwest of Saratoga in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it is California's oldest state park and protects a towering coast redwood forest laced with waterfalls and canyon trails. Visitors typically drive 35 to 45 minutes over Highway 9 or the winding route through the hills to reach its main entrances, making it a feasible day trip from a Saratoga base.

Closer to town, Villa Montalvo is a Mediterranean-style estate set in nearly 200 acres of wooded gardens and walking trails, long known as an arts and culture venue with rotating exhibitions, concerts, and a writer's residency program. It sits only a few minutes from the Saratoga Village center. Nearby, the historic Mountain Winery occupies a stone winery built in the 1850s on the slopes above the city, and is now best known for its summer concert series paired with estate wine. Across the street, Hakone Estate and Gardens offers one of the oldest Japanese gardens in the United States, with koi ponds, a bamboo grove, and traditional structures laid out across wooded hillsides.

Saratoga's own Village area, sometimes called the Village of Saratoga, anchors the city's identity: a short stretch of locally owned restaurants, boutiques, and tasting rooms that gives the town a walkable, low-key center unusual for the South Bay. From there, a short drive west also leads into the broader Santa Cruz Mountains wine region, while Los Gatos lies just down the hill to the south.

For a short-term rental, Saratoga offers an appealing combination of small-town calm, a handful of polished cultural and natural attractions within minutes, and easy reach of the wider Bay Area's major draws, from San Francisco to the Santa Cruz coast. It suits travelers who want a quieter, greener base than downtown San Jose or San Francisco, while still being close enough to the valley's tech campuses, universities, and event venues.
