Landers is a small, unincorporated desert community in San Bernardino County, California, set in the high Mojave Desert on the northern side of the Morongo Basin. With a population of only a few thousand residents scattered across wide, sandy flats dotted with creosote and Joshua trees, the area has a sparse, open feel that draws artists, stargazers, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is best known as a quieter, off-the-beaten-path gateway to Joshua Tree National Park and for its iconic mid-century dome, the Integratron. The nearest major city is Palm Springs, roughly 50 miles to the south, while Los Angeles sits about 130 miles to the west.

Just a short drive south of Landers, the town of Joshua Tree serves as the most popular northern entry point to Joshua Tree National Park, a vast protected area famous for its stacked boulder piles, twisted juniper and pinyon pines, and strikingly dark night skies. The drive from Landers to the town of Joshua Tree takes about 20 minutes, and from there visitors can be inside the park in just a few more minutes, with access to popular trailheads like Hidden Valley and Barker Dam.

Within Landers itself, the Integratron is a striking white acoustic dome built in the 1950s by aircraft manufacturer and UFO researcher George Van Tassel. Today it is best known for its signature sound-bath sessions, where visitors recline inside the domed structure while quartz crystal bowls are played to produce resonant tones, and it remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the Morongo Basin.

A few miles north of the community, Giant Rock — one of the largest free-standing boulders in the world — sits out in the open desert and is closely tied to the area's mid-century contactee history. Visitors can reach the rock via a short dirt-road turnoff, and the surrounding flats are popular for stargazing and quiet desert wandering.

To the west, the historic Old West movie set of Pioneertown offers a step back into cinematic frontier history, with Mane Street still lined with original false-front facades. The community is also home to Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, a beloved roadhouse and live-music venue. The drive from Landers to Pioneertown runs roughly 40 minutes over winding high-desert roads.
