Ione is a small foothill city in Amador County, California, with a population of roughly 7,000 residents. Tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills at the edge of California's historic Gold Country, the city has the feel of a quiet, sun-warmed Gold Rush town, surrounded by oak-studded hills, vineyards, and a string of nearby reservoirs. It is best known locally as a launching point for wine tasting in the Shenandoah Valley, outdoor recreation along the Mokelumne River, and visits to nearby Gold Rush-era communities such as Jackson, Sutter Creek, and Plymouth. Ione sits about 40 miles southeast of Sacramento and roughly 50 miles east of Stockton, putting it within easy reach of the Central Valley while still feeling a world apart from it.

One of Ione's most recognizable landmarks is Preston Castle, an imposing Romanesque-style building that began construction in the 1890s as the home of the Preston School of Industry, California's first juvenile reform school. The river corridor itself draws kayakers, rafters, and anglers, particularly in the spring and early summer when water levels are at their peak.

A few miles south of Ione lies the Shenandoah Valley, the heart of Amador County's wine country and one of the most distinctive Zinfandel-growing regions in California. Dozens of small family-run wineries, tasting rooms, and picnicking patios line the two-lane roads between Plymouth and Pine Grove, and the area has become a popular weekend destination for visitors from Sacramento and the Bay Area. Most of the tasting rooms are within about a 15- to 25-minute drive of Ione.

Nearby Jackson, the Amador County seat, adds a layer of Gold Rush history to the area. The town is home to the Kennedy Gold Mine, once one of the deepest gold mines in the world and now open for surface tours, as well as a lively main street of shops, restaurants, and the Jackson Rancheria Casino, all about a 15-minute drive east of Ione.
