About Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores is a beachfront city in Baldwin County, Alabama, hugging the Gulf of Mexico's white-sand shoreline. The permanent population sits at roughly 11,000, though that figure balloons many times over during peak summer months when families, snowbirds, and beachgoers descend on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The town carries a laid-back, vacation-focused character, with a small cluster of locally owned seafood restaurants, beach shops, and ice-cream stands alongside the larger condo towers and chain hotels that line the coast. It serves as the primary gateway to Alabama's stretch of the Gulf and sits about 45 miles southeast of Mobile and roughly 35 miles west of Pensacola, Florida.

The centerpiece of the area is Gulf State Park, a 6,150-acre preserve that runs through the heart of Gulf Shores. Just a few minutes from the city's main beachfront, the park offers more than two miles of white-sand beach, a popular fishing pier, miles of backcountry trails, a freshwater lake, and a championship golf course. Visitors come for swimming, biking, birding, and educational programs at the learning campus, and the campgrounds and cabins make it easy to spend several days exploring.

Just west of town, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge protects about 7,000 acres of coastal habitat, including beaches, dunes, and maritime forests. Roughly a 15-minute drive from central Gulf Shores, the refuge is a critical nesting ground for loggerhead and Kemp's ridley sea turtles and a stopover for hundreds of species of migratory birds. A few short, well-marked hiking trails let visitors experience the area without disturbing sensitive wildlife.

A longer drive west along the peninsula brings visitors to Fort Morgan, a masonry fort guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay. Sitting roughly 25 miles from Gulf Shores, the fort played a pivotal role in the Civil War's Battle of Mobile Bay and now operates as a historic site with guided tours, a small museum, and periodic reenactments. The ferry from nearby Dauphin Island connects the fort to the rest of the Gulf Coast and adds a scenic day-trip option.

Gulf Shores offers short-term rental owners a reliable mix of beach appeal, outdoor recreation, and historic interest within a compact footprint. Its position between two larger cities, its year-round mild climate, and the steady flow of vacationers drawn to the white-sand beaches make it a particularly resilient market. Whether guests come for a long weekend on the sand, a week of nature exploration, or a deeper dive into Gulf Coast history, the area delivers a variety of experiences that keep visitors returning season after season.
