Chitina, AK

Chitina is a small unincorporated community in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area of eastern Alaska, sitting at the confluence of the Chitina and Copper Rivers. With a population of approximately 100 residents, it is one of the state's tiniest but historically significant outposts. Originally established as a railroad terminus for the Copper River and Northwestern Railway in the early 1900s, Chitina retains a frontier character and serves today as a key southern gateway for travelers heading into the vast wilderness of Wrangell–St. Elias National Park. The community lies roughly 250 miles east of Anchorage, accessible via the Glenn and Richardson highways, with the drive typically taking around five to six hours depending on weather and road conditions.

Just north of Chitina, the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve opens up an enormous expanse of glacier-carved mountains, ice fields, and boreal forest. Spanning more than 13 million acres, it is the largest national park in the United States and forms part of a transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Canada. From Chitina, the unpaved McCarthy Road climbs roughly 60 miles into the heart of the park, ending at the small community of McCarthy, with travel times commonly running two to three hours one-way depending on road and weather conditions.

A short distance beyond McCarthy, the preserved copper-mining structures of Kennecott rise dramatically against a backdrop of glacier-capped peaks. Once home to one of the richest copper ore operations in the world in the early twentieth century, the townsite is now managed as a National Historic Landmark within the park and offers visitors a chance to walk among its historic mill buildings and iconic red wooden structures. The drive from Chitina to Kennecott typically takes around three to four hours over the McCarthy Road, making the community a natural overnight stop for those continuing deeper into the park.

The Copper River itself draws visitors from around the world for its legendary salmon runs, and Chitina is widely regarded as a premier road-accessible point for dip-net and rod fishing during the seasonal openings. Anglers gather along the river's gravel bars each summer, and the surrounding landscape of braided channels, distant peaks, and wildlife-rich wetlands gives the area a remote, photogenic character that defines the visitor experience.

Chitina's appeal as a short-term rental base lies in its position as a true wilderness crossroads. It offers travelers a quieter, road-accessible alternative to the busier gateway towns while still placing them within reach of North America's largest concentration of protected wilderness, an internationally recognized mining heritage site, and one of the continent's most celebrated wild-salmon fisheries, all set against the striking backdrop of interior Alaska.
