About Bellville

Bellville is a small, quiet village in Richland County in north-central Ohio, with a population of roughly 1,900 residents. It has the feel of a traditional Midwestern farming community, with a compact historic downtown, tree-lined streets, and a strong connection to the surrounding countryside. The village sits along the Clear Fork of the Mohican River and is widely considered a gateway to the Mohican region, a popular outdoor recreation area of rolling hills, forests, and gorges. Columbus lies about 75 miles to the southwest, while Cleveland is roughly 60 miles to the north, with Mansfield, the nearest larger city and Richland County seat, located only about 10 miles to the north.

A short drive southeast of Bellville brings visitors to Malabar Farm State Park, the former estate of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield. The park features the iconic 32-room Big House, hiking and bridle trails, working farm operations, and panoramic views of the Pleasant Valley. It is one of the most visited state parks in Ohio and offers a blend of literary history and rural scenery that appeals year-round.

To the east of the village, the Mohican State Park and adjacent Mohican-Memorial State Forest offer a much larger outdoor playground, with miles of marked hiking and mountain-biking trails, the scenic Mohican River gorge, a covered bridge, and a landmark fire tower. The forest is one of the largest contiguous woodlands in the state and draws visitors throughout the year for fall color, spring wildflowers, and summer paddling on the river. From Bellville, the park can be reached in roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car.

Within the village itself, the Ohio Bird Sanctuary occupies a wooded property near the junction of State Routes 13 and 97. The sanctuary rehabilitates native birds of prey and other wildlife, maintains several miles of easy walking trails, and hosts educational programs and raptor presentations that appeal to families. It is a small but well-regarded stop and is a comfortable walk or short drive from most parts of Bellville.

For travelers, Bellville's appeal lies in the contrast it offers: a calm, walkable village with a handful of small shops and eateries, set within minutes of some of central Ohio's most scenic state parks and forests. Its position between Mansfield, Columbus, and Cleveland, combined with the steady year-round draw of the Mohican region, gives short-term rental owners a base that can attract outdoor enthusiasts, history-minded visitors, and families looking for a quieter alternative to busier tourist hubs.
