Atlantic is a tiny, unincorporated fishing village in Carteret County, North Carolina, set on the Core Banks barrier island and home to only a few hundred year-round residents. To the west across Core Sound, the historic waterfront town of Beaufort offers a contrast to the village's bare-bones feel, with a preserved 18th- and 19th-century streetscape, a working harbor, and the North Carolina Maritime Museum.

A short drive east of Morehead City, Fort Macon State Park fills the tip of Bogue Banks with Civil War-era fortifications, wide Atlantic beaches, and easy nature trails. It is one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina and a natural companion piece to a stay in Atlantic, pairing well with a day of town strolling or a museum visit before the ferry ride back across the sound.
