Arcadia, FL

Arcadia is a small inland city in southwest Florida that serves as the county seat of DeSoto County. With a population of roughly 7,000 to 8,000 residents, it has the feel of a quiet, traditional Florida town set among cattle pastures, citrus groves, and oak hammocks. The community is best known for its historic downtown antique district and as a launch point for outdoor recreation along the nearby Peace River. It sits roughly fifty miles southeast of Fort Myers, about an hour's drive, and is also within easy reach of Sarasota and the broader Gulf Coast barrier-island beaches.

The heart of the city is its historic downtown, centered on the DeSoto County Courthouse square, where a long row of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century brick buildings houses one of the largest concentrations of antique and specialty shops in the region. The area draws weekend visitors from across southwest Florida who come to browse, dine at local restaurants, and walk the small but well-preserved main street, which has been the commercial and civic center of the community since the rail era. Downtown Arcadia is recognized for its collection of contributing historic structures.

Just a few minutes west of town, the Peace River draws paddlers, fossil hunters, and families looking for an easy outdoor outing. The slow-moving, spring-fed waterway is known for canoe and kayak trips that often turn up shark teeth and other prehistoric fossils in its sandy banks, and several outfitters in and around Arcadia rent equipment and lead guided trips. Peace River winds through the region and is one of the defining natural features of the area.

The Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo is a long-running tradition held each March at the Mosaic Arena on the edge of town, and the surrounding ranchlands host trail rides, barrel racing, and other Western-style events throughout the year. Just east of the city, Morgan Park and the riverfront green spaces offer picnic areas, playgrounds, and access points to the river for visitors who want a low-key afternoon close to downtown. The rodeo grounds, established in the early twentieth century, are considered one of the older continuously operating rodeo venues in the state.

Arcadia makes a compelling base for short-term rentals precisely because it offers something the nearby Gulf Coast beaches do not: a slower pace, genuine small-town character, and quick access to rivers, ranches, and the kind of inland Florida scenery that feels a world away from the condos of Fort Myers or Sarasota. Guests can pair a stay here with day trips to the Gulf beaches, with a half-day of fossil hunting on the Peace River, or with a rodeo weekend, all while staying in a setting that still feels distinctly old Florida.
